GALF
I feel it’s necessary to preference this by saying I’m terrible at golf.
When I was in high school, golf was actually the subject of Gym class. we all went out to the Phantom Lake golf course ( a location with a lot less Boos.) and were given the rundown on how to whack the ball into the hole. It was really windy that day, but the only think I’ve ever understood about the sport is that you hit the thing and you casually walk for a while. because Gym class wasn’t a whole day, we were prompted by our teacher to quickly go through a certain number of holes. So on this only day of ever playing golf, I never paid attention to what I should be doing, I knew I just had to get this over with. After class to go back to school I hitched a ride with a fellow student who told me to grab the wheel as he put his foot on the gas while proceeding to put his clothes on.
If my memory serves me correctly though, I think this may have been the only time in my life I’ve also ever got a hole in one. High School was a long time ago and nobody I know is going to be able to deny me that memory.
How I feel about most sports is “I don’t like golf but the idea of golf in video game form.”* There’s a lot of systems in place that help me understand what it is I need to do (which is no way going to translate into real life). I like Mario Golf because mascot characters means it’s a safe bet on being arcade-y and fun.
Arcade-y and fun is what the new speed golf brings to the table, and honestly the big reason why I picked it up in the first place. Racing to finish the course while also being meticulous about my shots to get under par brings and aspect to galf that I think I honestly prefer.
You know, cause it’s a boring sport.
But I don’t want to sit here and review the game, cause there’s enough out there for people to consume to determine whether or not Maryoh Galf is right for you.
You want my opinion? YES get it! let me know so I have someone to play this game with and we’ll crack open a couple of cold ones and play on stream. It’s a solid experience, it’s got characters you know and love (like Chargin’ Chuck), plus I don’t think there’s really been a golf game since what… the Gamecube? the Wii?
Just make sure your joycons work!?!?
I should this mention this part incase someone is having a similar experience. I don’t know if it’s the game or my controllers, but the joycons are often and always struggling with analog stick movements and button presses. there’s either a delay in movement or the buttons don’t work when I press them. It’s a weird problem that is always fixed by tapping to and from the home screen. It could be because the joycons are visibly broken, despite the common drift. Pieces of the plastic shell have been broken off and I’m one step away from duct-taping over them instead spending 100 bucks on a new set that will last me a year.
I bring this up because, with my joycons being on their last legs, this game seems to be the only one in my library that the things are struggling with.
Well, I haven’t checked.
Another thing about this game that is worth pointing out, Nintendo games seem to follow this trend a lot where additional content is released over time. The good thing is that the content is a free update, but it’s artificial longevity to “encourage” continuous play. The Previous game in the Mario sports, ‘Mario Tennis Aces’
While Aces encouraged you to constantly participate in online tourneys to unlock things, this game more or less just offers updates.
So who’s to say what future course or boring Mario bad guy will be added in the future.
These are just loose thoughts as I continue to trudge through the game. Nothing too fancy. Bellow is a highlight from the July 4th stream in which I played some things for the first time.
